Pamukkale and Hierapolis: The Deep Knowledge of the Ancient World for Healing Hot Waters
In southwestern Turkey, near the modern city of Denizli, lies one of the world’s most extraordinary natural and archaeological treasures: Pamukkale (pamuk = cotton + kale = castle, “the cotton castle” in Turkish), formed by dazzling white terraces formed by mineral-rich thermal waters.
In ancient times, the main name of the center was from the city of Hierapolis, whose Greek name means “Sacred City” (Hiera Polis).
Hierapolis was one of the most important spa and healing centers of the Greek and Roman worlds.
The city was founded in the 2nd century BC. by the rulers of the kingdom of Pergamon, probably under King Eumenes II. Subsequently it became part of the Roman Empire and became one of the most famous spa centers in the Mediterranean.

In Greek and Roman times, travelers did not say they were going to Pamukkale, that is a very recent name: they said they were going to Hierapolis, the famous sacred spa city of healing springs.
The hot springs emerging from the ground were seen as a divine gift, they waters were sacred and they had to be protected and preserved. In the city there were temples, sanctuaries and the famous Ploutonion, a cave from which natural gases escaped. The ancients considered it a gateway to the underworld ruled by Pluto (the Roman equivalent of Hades).
The Ploutonion of Hierapolis: Gateway to the Underworld
One of the most fascinating and mysterious places in ancient Hierapolis was the Ploutonion, a sacred sanctuary associated with the god of the Underworld.
The name Ploutonion (Greek: Πλουτώνιον, Ploutṓnion) literally means “Place of Pluto” or “Sanctuary of Pluto.” It derives from Ploutōn (Πλούτων), the Greek name of Pluto, lord of the Underworld. The name Ploutōn itself comes from the Greek word ploutos (πλοῦτος), meaning “wealth” or “riches.”
Pluto was the master of the earth’s hidden riches: precious metals, fertile soils, and all treasures lying beneath the ground.
Located near the thermal springs of Hierapolis, the Ploutonion consisted of a cave and a small temple built above a geological fault (like in the horacle of Delphi, by the way). From the cave emerged invisible volcanic gases, primarily carbon dioxide, which could be deadly in high concentrations.
Ancient visitors observed that birds and small animals entering the cave often died almost immediately, while only some priests appeared capable of approaching the entrance unharmed. The site was a supernatural gateway connecting the world of the living with the realm of the dead.
The geographer Strabo described the sanctuary in the first century CE, noting that animals released into the cave perished quickly because of the poisonous vapors. Modern scientific studies have confirmed that the cave emits large quantities of carbon dioxide from deep underground geological activity.
For the inhabitants of Hierapolis, the Ploutonion was a sacred place where religion, geology, and the healing power of the thermal springs converged. Pilgrims visited the sanctuary seeking divine signs, prophetic dreams, healing, and contact with the powers believed to dwell beneath the earth.
A Natural Masterpiece Created by Thermal Waters
The white terraces of Pamukkale are made of travertine, a type of limestone deposited by thermal springs. As hot mineral-rich water emerges from underground and flows across the hillside, carbon dioxide escapes into the atmosphere. This process causes calcium carbonate to precipitate and gradually form the brilliant white pools and terraces that characterize the site today.
One of the most striking features of Pamukkale is the brilliant white color of its terraces, which resemble snowfields or giant cascades of cotton. This appearance is unusual among thermal springs and is the result of a unique geological process.
The thermal waters of Pamukkale are exceptionally rich in calcium carbonate, a mineral dissolved underground as the water flows through limestone-rich rocks. Deep beneath the surface, the hot water contains large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide and calcium.
When the thermal water emerges into the open air, it begins to cool and release carbon dioxide. As this gas escapes, the dissolved calcium carbonate can no longer remain in solution and gradually precipitates, forming tiny white crystals.
Over thousands of years, these crystals have accumulated layer upon layer, creating the dazzling white deposits known as travertine. The same process can be observed on a much smaller scale inside a kettle or coffee machine, where minerals dissolved in water leave white deposits after heating.
Pamukkale is particularly spectacular because the amount of calcium carbonate carried by its springs is exceptionally high and old. The continuous flow of mineral-rich water constantly renews the white surface, covering older deposits and maintaining the bright appearance of the terraces.
Many other thermal springs around the world are not white because their waters contain different minerals. Springs rich in iron may produce red, orange, or yellow deposits. Sulfur-rich springs often appear gray, greenish, or yellow and are known for their characteristic smell. Other hot springs may contain silica rather than calcium carbonate, creating completely different colors and textures.
The whiteness of Pamukkale therefore reflects the unique chemistry of its waters. It is not the heat itself that creates the famous terraces, but the extraordinary concentration of calcium carbonate and the continuous geological process that has been building the travertine formations for tens of thousands of years.
The thermal springs of Pamukkale emerge at temperatures ranging from approximately 35°C to over 100°C (95°F to 212°F) in some underground sources.
As the water cools and spreads across the landscape, it creates a series of shallow pools filled with crystal-clear water.

Today we lost a lot of knowledge about healing waters, and many doctors prefers to prescribe pills and therapies in the city, but in the past they knew very well that water is a precious source of healing, capable of restoring harmony to body and mind, and bringing the body back into balance. It’s not just the presence of minerals, but the entire electromagnetic field of the water and the presence of antioxidant mineral ions that help the body.

Some remains in Italy, but they are meager remnants, like the towns of Tabiano Terme near Parma, or Sirmione on Lake Garda. But in the past, it was as if the hospital were the entire town, a healing community, where the entire energy led to well-being.
Thermal Baths in Greek Culture
The ancient Greeks regarded water as both a physical and spiritual source of purification. Natural springs were often associated with gods, nymphs, and healing deities.
Bathing was considered an important component of health and hygiene. Greek physicians, including the followers of Hippocrates, recognized the therapeutic value of mineral waters and frequently recommended bathing for certain illnesses and physical conditions, he prescribed hot waters for:

People with skin affections, like psoriasi, dematites, rosacea, nowadays do not have the time and culture for staying for a long period in these natural places (and most of thems are actually lost or abandoned), but this kind of therapies are more healthy and simple of so many difficult treatments like lasers. If our doctors prescribed prolonged thermal baths lasting at least a month, and health systems and insurance companies paid for them, it would be a true revolution in the healthcare system: health comes from a complete regeneration of mind, body, and spirit, and detaching from the environment that created the disease is always part of the healing process.
Pamukkale and Hierapolis are the witness of a very good and wise healing system, and remain among the world’s most remarkable examples of how natural phenomena can influence medicine, culture, religion, and human history, making them one of the most extraordinary heritage sites on Earth.
Other sites similar to Hierapolis in the World
Across the world, there are a few remarkable natural sites that resemble Pamukkale, where mineral-rich waters create striking white or brightly colored terraces through the deposition of calcium carbonate. One of the closest analogues is Badab-e Surt in Iran, a spectacular system of stepped travertine pools formed by two different mineral springs. While the site is geologically active and visually similar to Pamukkale, it does not function as a developed thermal spa center, and access remains relatively natural and unregulated.
In Hierve el Agua in Mexico, the landscape features dramatic “petrified waterfalls” formed by mineral-rich spring water flowing over cliffs for thousands of years. Although visitors can bathe in some of the natural pools, it is not a structured thermal spa complex; instead, it is more of a natural recreational and cultural site with limited facilities.
In the United States, Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park presents one of the most dynamic travertine systems in the world. Its bright white terraces are constantly changing due to ongoing geothermal activity. However, bathing is not allowed, and there are no spa facilities, as the area is protected within a national park.
Finally, Huanglong in China is famous for its tiered pools of blue, yellow, and white mineral deposits set in a mountainous landscape. Like Yellowstone, it is a protected natural heritage site and not a thermal spa destination; bathing is prohibited in order to preserve its fragile ecosystem.
In summary, while all these locations share the same geological mechanism as Pamukkale—calcium carbonate deposition from mineral-rich waters—Pamukkale remains unique for combining this natural phenomenon with an accessible and historically rooted thermal bathing culture.
